妖怪 Yōkai

back from Japan

An imaginary travel diary

For Chloé. The monster is known. We will fight him

They have been around since the early middle ages. They accompanied the Japanese mythology.  Grew up in the shadows and dark corners of the enlightened mind of the Meiji era.

They fed the fashion of fantasy writings and prints. They are found in woodcuts and black short stories. They have been rediscovered by manga and modern fantasy authors. They survive in anime.

Hokusai, Kyosai, Miyazaki, Murakami used and have fed them. Today these terrifying monsters have grown up and yet disappear from our vision of pragmatic modern people.

However they are there, lurking, in the hollow of the strange Japanese landscapes. They are waiting for us. They will emerge when the time comes. They gave me their word. They will be waiting. I met them on this strange journey.
